Brooding Guidance

Brooding: The First 14 Days

The brooding period shapes how the whole flock performs later on. Five things matter, and they matter equally.

  • Temperature management — chicks lose heat very quickly, so holding the right ambient temperature protects both their health and their final weight.
  • Clean water — water affects virtually every function in the bird, and how much clean water a chick gets while brooding shows up in its long-term growth.
  • Fresh air — proper ventilation keeps air quality good throughout the brooder and spreads the heat evenly rather than leaving hot and cold pockets.
  • Bright light — high light intensity for the first five to seven days stimulates activity, which is what gets chicks eating and drinking properly.
  • Access to feed — clean, fresh feed from the moment the box is opened. A chick should never have to go looking for its next meal.

Brooding Temperatures

Day-old chicks cannot regulate their own body temperature, so the brooder does it for them. Start warm and step the temperature down each week as they feather up.

Recommended brooding temperatures for layer chicks by age, for cage brooding and floor brooding
Age Cage brooding Floor brooding
Day 1–3 33–34 °C 35 °C
Day 4–7 32–34 °C 33 °C
Day 8–14 29–31 °C 31 °C
Day 15–21 26–29 °C 29 °C
Day 22–28 24–26 °C 26 °C
Day 29–35 21–23 °C 23 °C
Day 36+ 21 °C 21 °C

Guideline temperatures measured at chick height. Always let the birds themselves have the final say.

Reading Your Chicks

How the chicks spread out under the heat source tells you more than the thermometer does.

  • Just right — chicks evenly spread across the whole brooding area, moving freely and chirping contently.
  • Too hot — chicks drift out to the perimeter, away from the heat, panting with their wings held away from the body, and go quiet.
  • Too cold — chicks crowd together directly under the heat source and call loudly. Noisy chicks are almost always cold chicks.
  • Draft — chicks huddle in one group off to one side, away from the draft. Check for gaps, open doors and uneven airflow.

Feeding Through The Rearing Period

Chicks move through three feed phases before they reach point of lay. Feed freely — there is nothing to gain from restricting a growing pullet.

Starter

Day 1 – week 8 · 32–35 g per bird per day

High energy, protein, vitamin and mineral levels to drive optimum organ and skeletal growth at the stage that sets the bird up for life.

Grower

Week 8 – week 15 · 48–50 g per bird per day

Slightly lower protein than the starter, with the mineral balance kept close to it so the frame keeps developing evenly.

Pullet Developer

Week 16 – week 18 · 82–85 g per bird per day

Builds lean muscle and body reserves, and lays down the bone calcium reserve a pullet draws on once she comes into production.
